FOREWORD
I have had the pleasure of moderating the highly acclaimed
1st and 2nd Maritime Seminars for Judges of the Superior
Courts. It is therefore an honour to have been asked to
provide the foreword for this book which complies the papers
presented at the 2nd Maritime Seminar held in Accra, Ghana
from the 28th - 29th October 2005.
The current volume is the second in the series and has thus
earned for itself the title of the Admiral II. The book
incorporates papers on contemporary topics such as the Legal
Status of an Agent in International Transactions, Contracts
for the International Sale of Goods and Documentary Credits
and Contracts of Affreightment in a most coherent manner.
Notoriously complex subjects such as Liens, Statutory Rights
in Rem and Mortgages, General Averages and Salvage are
presented in a very practical manner without sacrificing
content. The papers were presented by seasoned and eminent
lawyers in the field of Maritime Law and International
Trade.
While motivated by practical applications, the presenters
have clearly written papers that are of as much interest to
researchers and students as to practitioners, by including
an extensive bibliography. This book’s excellent
organization and style allow it to serve well as both a
self-contained tutorial and an indispensable desk reference
for law students and lawyers alike.
This book is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to
figure out how best to follow the law. It is also an
outstanding recommendation for the consummate maritime
professional, for it makes practical sense of complex
maritime problems.
My hope for this book is that it will begin to make obvious
the role of an informed judiciary in the facilitation of
trade.
I am happy to congratulate the authors on their
accomplishment, and to inform the readers that they are
looking at a landmark in the development of the field of
Maritime Law.
